4 DIALYSIS PATIENTS: WAITING TO LONG 4 A MACHINE FROM A TECH'S POINT OF ...

A few reasons from my point of view as to why sometimes dialysis patients wait so long, to get on the dialysis machines.

Issues regarding first shift dialysis patients/individuals 4:30-6:00a.m

1. WATER ROOM ISSUES
     a. Chlorine/Chloramines Tes
     b. Inspection from corporate
     c. Bicarb/Acid/RO (Reverse Osmosis water cleaning machine) Issues.

2. Unit MACHINE ISSUES
    a. Leaking Machines
    b. Failed machine test
    c. Lack of Essential supplies (person forgot to order either lines, dialyzers, or saline bags etc).

3. STAFF
    a. Opener is very sick or schedule confusion
    b. Adjusting to new time frames from management for opening the unit
    c. New equipment setup/ or new machine additions ex....chairsides/critline machines
    d. Short of Staff

Issues regarding second and third shift dialysis patients/individuals

1. PATIENTS BEFORE YOU
    a. The individual before you could've arrived in the morning late for treatment. It could have been           a transportation issue to consider.
    b. Post TX Complications with a patient from the previous shift...(Passing out, low B/P, Seizures,           bleeding profusely).

2. MACHINE ISSUES
    a. Testing Failed for that machine for some reason. Or the machine becomes defective, prompting           it to be diagnosed and/or removed.
    b. Constant leaking.
    c. Machine is not sucking up the bicarb/acid creating conductivity issues with the machine.

Remember: Issues from before or during the 1st shift, affects all other shifts remaining. Ask your technician, the nurse or clinical manager what is going on especially if you have to go to work. If these are constant issues, not once in a while happenings.
